Woven from natural rattan and water hyacinth, theBulb chair from Onyxlooks like its namesake, but also integrates one: an LED light is nestled in its proboscis, giving the occupant a gentle halo of illumination. Conceived by Belgian designer GaĆ«tan Van de Wyer and made by Onyx in Thailand, the Bulb draws on the flexible (and rapidly renewable) properties of water hyacinth and rattan, a plant that resembles bamboo but more flexible….Read the full story on TreeHugger

But forget mud huts and even theGreat Mosque(Mali’s masterpiece of traditional earth building). Despite it being an ancient building material, designing with earth these days is not as humble as it may appear, especially in urban settings. Image credit: Dieter Spannknebel / Getty ImagesDespite being one of the smaller rooms in most homes, the modern bathroom serves many purposes. It’s a sanctuary, a room for pampering, and where we clean ourselves, but it’s also where myriad household toxins lurk, and where much of the average home’s water goes right down the drain. But don’t fret. There are so many ways to green your bathroom design, you’ll never have to waste water or pollute the environment again. Read theGre…Read the full story on TreeHugger
